Head coach Seth Littrell released a statement after the news came out, according to McGuire:

We are aware of the situation regarding Turner Smiley from earlier this morning and we are still in the process of collecting all the facts. Until I have an opportunity to talk with him I will refrain from further comment. We have high expectations for all of our student-athletes and we take situations like this very seriously. We will take an immediate and appropriate course of action after I speak with him.

The Denton Police Department had no other details related to the arrest available.

The news comes at a crucial time for North Texas and first-year coach Seth Littrell, as Smiley was easily the most experienced receiver in a very young receiving corps, with training camp set to start within a few weeks.

Nine of the team’s 14 receivers are either true/redshirt freshmen or redshirt sophomores and two are former dbs. For his career, Smiley has 39 receptions, 450 yards and two touchdowns.

No charges have been made in the case as of now, and there’s yet to be an announcement from the school regarding suspension for Smiley.
